Eugène Berman(1899-1972)"Armide", 1946.Gouache on paper.31x24 cm. He studied at the Académie Ranson in Paris in 1919 with Maurice Denis and Edouard Vuillard. He arrived in the USA in 1935 and at this time he became a decorator for theaters ans ballets. He realized the decors and costumes of "l'Opera de Quat'sous" by Bertolt Brecht at the Théâtre de l'étoile à Paris in 1937, "Devil's holiday", a ballet for the Metropolitan Opera of New York and for the ballet "Giselle" for the Compagnie of the Colonel de Basil. In 1941, The Institut of Modern Art of New York organized a retrospective for him.
