Title : " The Tosca ", act I-
Category : gouache
Size : 24 x 14 cm .
Signed;.
Alexandre-Nikolaïévitch BENOIS collaborated with Serge de Diaghilev and his compatriot Léon Bakst , the revilator of the Russian Ballets in Paris. If Diaghilev, with whom he created the group "Mir Iskousstva", was the animator,Benois, who was as well an author as a paintor at this time, was the theorist for this work. The significance of painting in the shows of the Russians Ballets is an account of him and Bakst:He said "The idee of the shows was ours".He combined with accuracy the poetical imagination and the rich popular tradition with his well-known decors for "Boris Godounov" at the 'Opéra de Paris in 1908, "Le Pavillon d'Armide"(1909),"Gisèle" in 1910, "Petrouchka"(1911). He worked in Russia again till 1926, for the Art Theater of Stanislavski.
