/ André DERAIN(1880-1954)."Le Barbier de Seville".1953.
André Derain(1880-1954)"Le Barbier de Séville"1953 Booklet : Sterbini adapted from Beaumarchais. Music by Rossini. Directed by Maurice Sarrazin.Orchestet of the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire directed by Carlo-Maria Giulini.Festival of Aix-en Provence. Edmonde Charles-Roux’s persuasion helped André Derain to decide he would take part to the Festival of Aix en Provence. The first demand which was offered to André Derain was to take part to the “Enlèvement au Sérail”, represented in 1951, directed by Pierre Bertin. This big success encouraged him, he accepted to design the decors and the costumes for The “Barbier de Séville”, directed by Maurice Sarrasin, in Aix en Provence, 1953. Clarendon, briefly but in an authoritarian way wrote: “André Derain hang up to the main wall of the archdiocese two Derain… You understand me.” That is a way to recongnize the paintor’s qualities through the work of the decorator. A work published 10 years later made light on the work of the artist and disclosed the freshness of his spirit.
