/ ARCHIVES PERSONNELLES DE L'ACTEUR ET METTEUR EN SCENE JEAN DARCANTE
Jean DARCANTE’s life was closely joined to theater in France during 50 years. Prize winner of the national Academy, it is committed by Gatson Baty to play « Les Caprices de Marianneé. He stayed in the group and played Dulcinée, Madame Bovary, Madame Capet untill Batty gave him (just a few months before he was mobilized for the war) the Cevallier des Grieux in the Mannon (written by Marcelle Maurette) to play. Then two passions seize him: the direction of plays for theaters and trade unionism. In 1942, since Claude Vermorel asked him for it, he began to organize the clandestine trade union of actors. At the Libération, this trade union had becam important and had the main role. Jean Darcante was the animator and at the same time he settled at the Palace (1944-45), then at the Renaissance (1946-56). During 15 years, he managed two things at once: the trade union action and the direction of his Compagnie. He directed "Cristobal" by Charles Exbrayat, "Un Don Juan" by Michel Aucouturier, "Monsieur Chasse" by Georges Feydau,"Quatre femmes" by Mouloudji(first play), "La Route au tabac" by Erskine Caldwel(adapted by Marcel Duhamel), "Le Matériel Humain" by Paul Raynal, "La Forêt pétrifiée" by R.E Sherwood(adapted by Marcel Duhamel)"Ce soir à Samarcande" by Jacques Deval, Filoumena Marturano d'Eduardo by Filippo(adapted by Audiberti)"Bel Ami" (Frédéric Dard). After these 15 years, the International Institute for Theater (Unesco), for which he was President, asked him to be International General Secretary – he stayed 20 years at this place. When he was about to die, he find a consolation by reading some words he received from the whole world. For an example: "To a great man of vision, feeling and insight. The British Center and Eugenio sent 33 telegrams from 33 theater groups from the 4 continents. To Jean darcante, who has the generousity and the courage to help the young people and the teater groups who had nothing but dreams and will.
